Bridging opportunity gaps in math education by combining Human + AI Tutoring

PLUS is led by Carnegie Mellon University collaborating with Carnegie Learning and Stanford University.

Our mission is to double math learning for 10,000 middle school students by 2026.

Our Motivation

Over 16 million students in the US, many from historically underserved and low-income communities, are currently waiting for high-impact tutoring. There is a significant gap access to high-quality math tutoring for these students.

Years of learning science research at CMU have proven that the most effective way for students to learn math is by actively practicing it. Math practice software presents ample opportunities for students to engage, but the problem remains that most students don’t consistently use these tools.

In the PLUS program, we unite math practice software with human tutors to ensure students receive support with both math concepts and learning motivation whenever needed.

Over 16 million students in the US are currently waiting for high quality math tutoring. PLUS scales up human tutoring by leveraging AI technology based on decades of learning science and engineering research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Our History

PLUS started as the Personalized Learning^2 (PL2) project with the aim to bridge opportunity gaps in the Pittsburgh region. Through partnerships with local afterschool programs, PL2 was able to reach students from historically underserved communities and was able to demonstrate a doubling of math learning during the pandemic, giving birth to the PLUS program.

Our Focus on Equity

PLUS is devoted to promoting equity in education through our instruction, initiatives, and partnerships. Over 90% of the students we currently serve are from low-income families; we endeavor to highlight the experiences and knowledge of underserved communities, including people of color, Black and Indigenous students, females in STEM, LGBTQIA+ students, and economically disadvantaged families.

We appreciate the abundant cultural value these communities bring to the educational environment, so we ensure that our tutors represent the ethnic, racial, and linguistic diversity of our pupils.

We partner with the Center for Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue our mission of equity.

PLUS is devoted to promoting fairness in education through our initiatives, collaborations, and instruction. Over 90% of the students currently served by our program are from low-income families. We acknowledge the abundant cultural capital that historically marginalized communities contribute to the educational environment, and we strive to ensure that our tutors represent the ethnic, racial, and linguistic diversity of the students we serve.
